TSUG currently has over 100 corporate members and around 50 individual members.
The Transport Statistics Users Group was formed in 1985, following an initiative by The Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (then known as the Chartered Institute of Transport) and the Statistics Users Council.
The TSUG is run by a management committee drawn from the membership. The committee consists of a Non executive chair, Executive chair, Treasurer, Membership and Website secretary, Newsletter editor, Yearbook coordinator and Publicity organiser and others without portfolio who contribute to, among other things, seminar organisation, report writing and minutes.Since being set up, the TSUG's efforts have largely been channelled into:
- The organisation of seminars and conferences addressing contemporary issues in the field of transport statistics. Most seminars are held in London, but there is an annual seminar held in Scotland and other ad hoc regional seminars. Attendance at seminars is free to members,
- The production of a regular Newsletter containing news and reviews of matters relating to transport statistics and the TSUG membership. The Newsletter is distributed to members approximately four times a year,
- The Transport Yearbook which includes a directory of sources and contacts in transport statistics. A copy of the Transport Yearbook is provided free of charge to all members.
Transport Statistics Division in the Department for Transport is keen to maintain and improve its links with users, and it regards the Transport Statistics Users Group as an important forum in this context. TSUG seminars provide the Department with opportunities to present specific aspects of its statistical activity to those outside the Department, to engage users in the National Statistics quality reviews, and to seek feedback on its outputs. The more representative TSUG is of all users of transport statistics, the more valuable the Group is to the Department.
TSUG has also developed an excellent working relationship with the Scottish Government Transport Statistics Branch.
